Keith Reissaus, consumer advocate for CIA4H, knows all too well the urgent need for a health care system that provides patient-centered, coordinated care – and the importance of being an informed patient and involved advocate. That’s because he’s experienced the consequences of misdiagnoses, poor quality care and a lack of communication with and among health care providers.
But Keith is using this experience to help make a difference in Indiana. In addition to being an executive at Goodwill and a Board member of Leapfrog, he is also a valuable team member at the Central Indiana AF4Q Alliance. In his role as a consumer representative on the Leadership and Consumer Advisory Teams for the Alliance, he works actively to ensure that the Alliance’s efforts meet the needs of patients and families, particularly the Alliance’s quality improvement efforts.
Keith also helps devise consumer engagement strategies and acts as a consumer voice in multi-stakeholder discussions and decision-making.
For example, Keith shared his experience at the AF4Q National Meeting last November, where he was a valued participant in the meeting at large, as well as at the National Partnership’s capacity-building workshop on effective communication.
Speaking about his personal experience, he says, “all too often we got silence” from health care providers. By achieving the AF4Q goals, he believes, the silence many patients and caregivers experience will be broken “in creative and constructive ways.”
